Not all subscribers are created equal. Some are ready to buy, others need nurturing, and some may never convert. RFM segmentation helps you tell the difference—and market accordingly.
What is RFM Segmentation?
RFM stands for:
- Recency: How recently did they engage or purchase?
- Frequency: How often do they engage or buy?
- Monetary: How much do they spend?
By scoring customers on these three dimensions, you create powerful segments for targeted marketing.
Why RFM Works
Traditional segmentation is one-dimensional:
- “Customers who bought Product X”
- “Subscribers who opened last email”
RFM is multi-dimensional, capturing the full customer relationship:
| Segment | Recency | Frequency | Monetary | Action |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Champions | High | High | High | Reward & upsell |
| Loyal | Medium | High | Medium | Cross-sell |
| At Risk | Low | High | High | Win-back urgently |
| New | High | Low | Low | Nurture |
| Hibernating | Low | Low | Low | Re-engage or sunset |

Implementing RFM in Your Email Marketing
Step 1: Score Your Customers
Assign scores 1-5 for each dimension:
Recency (days since last action)
- 5: 0-30 days
- 4: 31-60 days
- 3: 61-90 days
- 2: 91-180 days
- 1: 180+ days
Frequency (purchases/engagement)
- 5: 10+ actions
- 4: 6-9 actions
- 3: 3-5 actions
- 2: 2 actions
- 1: 1 action
Monetary (total spend)
- 5: Top 20%
- 4: 20-40%
- 3: 40-60%
- 2: 60-80%
- 1: Bottom 20%
Step 2: Create Segments
Combine scores into actionable segments. A customer with R=5, F=4, M=5 is a Champion.
Step 3: Craft Targeted Campaigns
Each segment gets different:
- Messaging tone
- Offer types
- Send frequency
- Content focus
